When the rain or snow or vileness came, they could not simply close a door or a window - their traffic for the day was virtually finished. As well, they were not able to jump in a railcar or a cabriolet and go to their homes to escape the brook simply because most of them did not have these things. If you look nearly at this photo, you can see the pain in this mans face. Unfortunately as well, a great plug of these street vendors were black, and most of them were black men.
